The key unit driving innovation at the Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG) is the Technology Transfer Office (TTO).
At TTO, novel scientific projects with commercialization potential are continuously reviewed. Researchers at GUMed receive comprehensive support in securing intellectual property rights, preparing technology offers, conducting market analyses, and developing commercialization strategies. The center also facilitates cooperation with investment funds and industry partners interested in supporting emerging technologies.
Indirect commercialization at the university is managed through a special-purpose entity, which in MUG’s case is Centrum Innowacji Medycznych Sp. z o.o. This entity oversees the commercialization process by establishing or acquiring shares in spin-off companies created to implement research and development (R&D) outcomes. As a result, MUG has established four spin-off companies:
- POLTREG S.A. – Focused on the commercialization of an innovative treatment method for type 1 diabetes. POLTREG is a unique example of a university spin-off in Poland that maintains a close collaboration with its parent institution, with the method’s inventors actively involved in its commercialization.

- DETOXED Sp. z o.o. – Developing innovative solutions to reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases. The company is bringing to market a rapid test strip for detecting bisphenol A (BPA) in urine and an analyzer for detecting endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) in drinking water and wastewater.

- GP4research Sp. z o.o. – Providing comprehensive support in the management and administration of clinical trials. The company was founded in response to the pharmaceutical industry’s need for a patient-centered approach to clinical research, ensuring that patient well-being remains the top priority.

- Centrum Badawcze nad Żywnością Funkcjonalną Sp. z o.o. (Functional Food Research Center) – Aiming to develop a new economic sector in Poland by creating a certification, production, processing, trade, and export system for functional food. The company also seeks to improve public health by promoting dietary changes through personalized nutrition based on precision diagnostics.

Through these initiatives, GUMed continues to foster innovation, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world applications.
