Indirect commercialization

Indirect commercialisation involves the acquisition or purchase of shares in companies to facilitate the implementation or preparation for the implementation of scientific research results or related know-how.

At the Medical University of Gdańsk (MUG), this process is conducted through a special purpose vehicle (SPV)Centrum Innowacji Medycznych Sp. z o.o.

An SPV is a single-shareholder capital company fully owned by the university. Its primary function is to hold shares in companies that commercialise R&D results developed at the university. At MUG, the Centrum Innowacji Medycznych serves as the university’s SPV, with 100% of its shares held by MUG.

Spin-off & Spin-out Companies

  • Spin-off – A company established by at least one researcher, doctoral student, or student to commercialise and implement innovative ideas or technologies. It remains organizationally, legally, financially, or infrastructurally dependent on the university.
  • Spin-out – A company founded by at least one researcher, doctoral student, or student to commercialise and implement innovative ideas or technologies. Unlike a spin-off, it is fully independent from the university in terms of organisation, legal status, financing, and infrastructure.
