Knowledge transfer is the bridge between academic research and the use of that research by societal and economic stakeholders. It is a mechanism to close the gap that usually exists between researchers and practitioners in any field of society.
Effective knowledge transfer entails an ongoing process that starts at a very early stage of innovative research and may turn into an industrial collaboration project, license agreement and/or a spin-off company. It is essentially about establishing a successful long-term relationship and collaboration between researchers, entrepreneurs, public and private third parties.
